From the CNN Center in Atlanta, Nicole Lapin. Here's a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.

Chrysler has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. In a statement, the company says the filing of the automaker is in its best interest. All schools are closed in Mexico which has been hit hardest by the swine flu virus. The strain's also known as H1N1. Mexico's president is telling people to stay home for about five days. Starting tomorrow, non-essential government offices will be closed untill next Tuesday. The World Health Organization has confirmed 236 cases of swine flu around the globe.

It appears the August wedding for the suspected Craigslist killer is not gonna happen. That's according to a lawyer for Philip Markoff's fiancee Megan McAllister. He confirms the wedding is being quote "dismantled" and says that the evidence against Markoff is making McAllister her family reevaluate him.

Obviously they are disturbing to anybody who would look and at that particular, I don't say it's been put for some meaning but obviously you gotta have to understand that's not the person that she knew in love. That's not the person that her family took into their, took into their family as a person that was gonna marry their daughter. So you have that big dichotomy of what this person was to them and what he's now being portrayed in the media.

Markoff has pleaded not guilty to killing a woman at the Boston Marriott. He also denies robbing another woman he also reportedly met through Craigslist.

And those are the headlines at this hour. For more on these stories and other news of the day, CNN is always your source on live on TV or on your cell phone.

From the CNN Center here in Atlanta, I'm Melissa Long. It's Friday, May 1st. Here's a look at some of the stories making news at this hour.

Leaders in Hongkong are reporting the first case of swine flu. They say the Mexican citizen flew to the region yesterday. If the World Health Organization confirms the diagnosis , it would be the first case of H1N1 in Asia. The patient is now isolated in a hospital.

Supreme Court Justice David Souter says he always prefered his native New Hampshire to D.C.. And our legal sources, tell CNN that Souter will inform his colleagues today that  he's retiring from what he's called the world's best job in the world's worst city. He'll probably leave in June when the court finishes up for the summer. Analysts are already speculating on who will fill his seat.

The balance on the court will probably not shift a great deal. Souter has become a part of the liberal wing. Obama will appoint someone who will vote much the same way, but new people always change the court and a new liberal justice, perhaps a woman, perhaps an African-American, perhaps the first Hispanic on the court, really could change the court in a, in subtle but real way.

Cold case investigators believe they've tracked down a serial killer from decades ago. Yesterday Los Angeles police announced that 72-year-old John Floyd Thomas Jr. was likely behind the murders of as many as 30 women between 1955 and 1978. He's in custody charge so far with two of the killings. A criminal justice expert says Thomas must be smart of avoiding being caught for so long.

If he didn't have that certain cunning, that criminal savoir-faire, if you will, we would caught him decades ago. But there is a small group of serial offenders who have that, that street smarts to avoid the cops and to stay at large for decades so they could assemble a body count of dozens.

And a famous Colonel helped the City of Chattanooga, Tennessee to fix potholes . The work's been done thanks to a donation from KFC restaurants. Chattanooga is one of four cities to receive donations for the repairs but there is a catch. The potholes have to be stamped, refreshed by KFC.

You're up-to-date. It's Friday, May 1st . Do stay with CNN and CNN.com for more on these stories or other news that develops today.

Body count refers to the total number of people killed in a particular event. In combat, the body count is often based on the number of confirmed kills, but occasionally only an estimate.

Prosecutors call it a hate crime, but the jury did not agree. Two teenagers are acquitted, They were yesterday of murder in a Pennsylvania courtroom and instead Brandon Piekarsky and Derrick Donchak were convicted of simple assault in the beating death last summer of Luis Ramirez. The prosecutors allege the teens and their friends goaded Ramirez into a fight, while an attorney for the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Education Fund very upset with the verdict.

It was a long case and the jury has rendered their verdict and they took a long time to deliberate on the case and we respect their verdict.

Failure to indicate the death of Luis Ramirez has set an extremely dangerous precedent. The jurors here sending the message that you can brutally beat a person without regard to their life and get away with it continue with your life uninterrupted, not in this case there wasn't even a slap on the wrist. In this case the message is that a person who may not be popular in society based on their national origin or certain characteristic has less value in our society.

Ramirez died of blunt force trauma two days after the beating. Defense attorneys say the trial was difficult.

It was a long process. We have been fighting this case for lots of months, it was highly charged obviously by all these cameras, the week of trial was very difficult and we are just delighted that it ended the way it did.

The number of the swine flue cases has jumped dramatically overnight. But we are gonna to keep this in perspective for you, here is the latest. The World Health Organization reporting that 615 people infected in 15 countries now that would be a 67% increase from the 365 confirmed cases that were reported just yesterday. However this is not because they are starting to see more new cases however these are just suspected cases that are now confirmed through testing in a lab. Also Hong Kong and South Korea have each confirmed one case about 200 guests and 100 staff members at one Hong Kong hotel had to be quarantined. The government ordered that quarantine after a Mexican man staying in the hotel got sick.

So far the strain in the US has not been nearly as deadly as we have been seeing in Mexico, we do know about 16 people confirmed dead from the swine flu in Mexico, just one child died of the swine flu here in the US, but President Obama says the US will be ready if this virus somehow mutates into something that is worse. This morning in his weekly address, he assured American people that every resource is being used.

As our scientists and researchers learn more information about this virus everyday, the guidance we offer will likely change. What we will not change is the fact that we will be making every recommendation based on the best science possible. We will also continue investing in every resource necessary to treat this virus and prevent a wider outbreak. The good news is that the current strain of H1N1 can be defeated by a course of antiviral treatment that we already have on hand. We began this week with 50 million courses of this treatment in the Strategic National Stockpile. Over the course of the last few days, we've delivered one quarter of that stockpile to states so they are prepared to treat anyone who is infected with this virus, we then purchased an additional thirteen million treatments to refill our strategic stockpiles.
