An Air France passenger plane carrying 228 passengers and crew is reported missing over the Atlantic Ocean. Tome Rivers reports from London. The jet was on a night flight from Rio de janeiro to Paris. The Air France airbus resorted 200 series, reportedly hit bad weather. According to the airline, a number of dead data messages from flight 447 was sent out about 15 minutes later indicating an electrical problem. At news conference in Paris an Air France spokesman described that specific changing chain of events. The plane went through turbulence, and then a number of automatic messages were transmitted by the aircraft to say that there was a fault. Around 7 Paris time, it was clear that a plane was in destroyable. A government source bureau says the plane disappeared from Brazilian radar screen around three and a half hours into the flight. Brazilian air force blames planes on the island of Fernando de Noronha had have been searching for the airliner. The U.S. automaker General Motors filed full for bankcrapsy bankruptcy today as a part of government-led plan to restructure the 100-year-old company. Brazilian search planes have spotted debris in the South Atlantic that could be the wreckage from the Air France jetliner, the disappeared Monday off Brazilian Brazils northeastern coast. The Brazilian air force said today the searchers have had spotted airline seats, oil and middle parts about 650 kilometers off the coast. The A spokesman said the debris will have to be retrieved and examining for series serial numbers of other identification to determine if it is from the missing plane. Brazilian navy naval ships are not expected in area until later today of Wednesday.

President Barack Obama is in Saudi Arabia, the first stop on a 5-day overseas trip. Bands played as Saudi King Abdullah greeted Mr.Obama at Riyadhs airport today, the two men then headed the King's farm for talks expected to center on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Iran's role in the Middle East and world oil prices. After he leaves Saudi Arabia, the President will travel to Egypt Thursday to deliver a speech to the Muslim community. A White House spokesman said Mr. Obama's goal of mending US-Muslim relations is a part of a long process and no quick fix is expected from the Cairo speech.



French officials have moblelized mobilized teams to conduct an international probe into why an Air France plane carrying 228 passengers crashed after taking off from Brazil. Brazil's government confirmed the wreckage found in the Atlantic Ocean belongs to the Air France flight. VOA's Brian Wagner reports. Brazil's Defense Minister Nelson Jobim said he no longer had any doubt that Air France flight 447 crashed off Brazil's coast. He said officials made the determination following the discovery of a strip of wreckage floating on the surface of the water off the Brazil mainland. Brazilian officials said the debris included metal fragments, plane seats as well as a jet fuel slick. However no body has been discovered from the plane carrying 216 passengers and 12 crew members. The Defense Minister added that flight recorders could be on the ocean floor. Air traffic controllers say they received no unusual messages or destras distress calls from crew of airbus 330 before disappeared. Air France officials however said aircraft's automated systems send a series of messages about electrical problems to maintenance personnel. Brian Wagner, VOA News.

U.S. special representative Richard Holbrooke says the Obama administration is promising to give 200 million dollars to Pakistan to help people displaced by a military offensive against Taliban militants. Holbrooke made the announcement today in Islamabad following a meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari. The aid pledge which must be approved by Congress is an addition to 110 million dollars that the United States promised last month.

US authorities have moved Guantanamo Bay terror suspect to the United States for the first time to face trial. The Justice Department says alleged Al-Qaeda conspirator Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani arrived in NY on Tuesday for prosecution in 1998 US embassy bombing in Africa and that killed 224 people. Iraqi officials say a car-bomb today exploded in the countrys south, killing at least 32 people and wounded wounding at least 45. Police say the blast targeted at a busy market district in the town of Bathaa near the southern city Nasiriya. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Iranian President Mohammed Ahmadinejad is accusing his election rivals of lying about the state of the economy to try to win votes on Friday's election in Iran. The US special envoy to the Middle East George Mitchell, says Washington is committed to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the establishment of Palestinian state. Mitchell spoke to reporters in Ramallah today after talks with Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas.

Pakistan's army says it is striking against a key militant staging area near a Taliban-held tribal region bordering Afghanistan. A military statement says the forces are attacking at least 600 suspected militants near Bannu with heavy fire. Local officials reported are terrorist artillery strikes.

The US-led coalition in Afghanistan says it killed a insurgent commander and about 16 other militants in a precision air strike in the western province of Ghor Tuesday. Officials said today military commander * was killed after he stopped in a romote remote area to meet other militants. Also a police chief says security forces have killed 30 Taliban militants of the past three days in an offensive in the southern province of Uruzgan. The police chief says two police officers were killed in operation. In southern Ghazni province authorities say Taliban militants killed two police officers today, Elsewhere in Ghazni police say at least one Afghan soldier was killed in a roadside bombing.

The Pacific island nation of Palau has agreed to temporarily accept a group of Chinese Muslims who have been held at the Guantanamo Bay facility.

Senate president Rose Francine Rogombe is Gabons new interim head of state following the death of longtime leader Omar Bongo. VOA West Africa correspondent Scott Stearns reports. The World Health Organization is likely to declare the first influenza pandemic in more than 40 years as infections of H1N1 swine flu virus continued to rise. WHO experts meeting in Geneva today are expected to recommend raising the pandemic alert level from phase 5 to the maximum phase six. Officials note the declaring of pandemic does not mean the disease has become more severe. But that there is an increasing number of infections in different geographical locations. Meanwhile, Hong Kong has closed its schools today after the discovery of that city's first cluster of swine flu infections. Heda Bayron reports from Hong Kong. The cluster of infections was found in secondary school where at least 12 people pupils fell ill with H1N1 swine flu virus. Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald ['dɔnəld] Tsang cut short his trip in mainland China and returned to territory to take charges with of the city's response to the outbreak. On Thursday, Tsang ordered all nurseries, kindergartens, primary and special schools to close for 14 days, in an attempt to stop the spread of the virus. The Students Committee has just confirmed the first cluster of local cases of human swine flu. We are unable to identify the source of infection. North Korea is demanding hundreds of millions of dollars from South Korea's companies operating and at a joining joint industrial complex, currently at the centre of some worsening relations between two countries. Envoy George Mitchell came here to reaffirm the words of US President Barack Obama who end the in a speech to the Muslim world last week said the only way to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is through a two-state solution. Mr. Mitchell spoke to reporters after meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.



The United States is pre- fully commiteed committed to working to the toward comprehensive peace throughout the Middle East. As President Obama said last week the American will not turn out our backs on the legitimate Palestinian aspiration, for dignity, opportunity, and stead of the road state of their own.



Mitchell repeated the remarks he made in Israel on Tuesday when he said the United States wants to see a prompt presumption resumption and early conclusion of peace negotiations. During this trip, the US envoy has called on Palestinians and Israel to fulfill their obligations under the 2003 roadmap to peace.



The international plan calls for an end to expansion the Jewish settlements in West Bank, the establishment of Palestinian state and for the Palestinian authorities to clamp down on the militant groups of new so that Palestinian state can live in peace and security along side Israel.



Palestinian officials welcomed Mitchell's remarks. Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said the Palestinian authority is doing its part to secure the territories in keeping with the terms of Roadmap agreement.

The tension ? tense internal stand up standoff between HAMAS militants who control the Gaza strip and President Abbas's moderate Fatah affection faction which rules only the West Bank threatens prospects for statehood. A number of people have been killed during the past two weeks in skirmishes between militants and Mr.Abbas security forces in the West Bank.



Mitchell met Tuesday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Natanyahu who was put himself out at odds with Obama administration by refusing to endorse the Tuesday's solution and by saying his government will not hold halt the expansion of settlements.



Domestically the Israel leader is under pressure from the right wing members of governing coalition who demand that he not halt settlement expansion. and Analysts say giving in to US's pressure may cause Mr. Netanyahu's coalition to break apart, plunging Israel into a political crisis. The Israeli leader is scheduled to deliver a policy speech on Sunday.
