Islamist insurgence in Somalia has captured another town to the north of capital, Mogadishu. Jowhar and Mahaday are located about 20 kilometers apart, roughly 100 kilometers north of the Somalia capital, Mogadishu. The town has had been held by Islamic Courts Union, an Islamic militia that backs Somalia's fragile government in its struggle with hard-lines Islamic militias. NATO says an air strike by one of its war planes that killed 8 civilians in southern Afghanistan in the midst of a controversy over civilian casualties. The NATO-led international military force on Wednesday said troops called in the air strike Tuesday in Helmand province after clashed about 25 insurgents. A NATO statement accused the militants of using the civilians as human shields.



Detained Burmese democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi greeted the foreign diplomats who appeared the court room on the third day retrial Wednesday. The leader of national pro-democratic party is charging with breaking the terms of house arrest after an American man swam to her outside lakeside home earlier this month and stayed there for a couple of days. The foreign aid group Doctors Without Borders says its withdrawn its support for a refugees camp in Thailand because military restrictions and coercion. The aid group says the Tai military using pressure to force the repatriation of ethnic Lao Hmong in the camp who may face persecution if sent back to Laos. VOA's Daneel Schearp reports from Bangkok. Doctors Without Borders told journalists Wednesday they will no longer cooperate with Tai military to provide medical care and distribute food to refugees at Huai Nam Khao. But the Paris-based groups says the recent month the Tai military has put into the in place unacceptable restrictions and use the coercive tactics to pressure the Hmong to return to Laos. Gilles Isard is the Thailand head of mission for Doctors Without Borders, also known by its French radiation abbreviation, MSF. He says the military no longer allows them to independently provide medical services and is using arbitrary arrest to intimidate refugees. U.S. officials are expressing relief that Sri Lanka's civil war is over and calling for clarity on who is responsible for the tremendous loss of lives in recent months. VOA's correspondent Steve Herman reports from Colombo. In the most direct comments since the fighting stopped, the United States is expressing the support for international cause calls to determine if the human rights laws were violated during the final phase of the fighting between Sri Lanka forces and Tamil rebels. Outgoing U.S. ambassador Robert Blake spoke at a news conference in the Sri Lanka's capital. On the question of war crimes, we think it's important for the international community to have more information about what happened on both sides during the recent offensive in northern Sri Lanka, and that's one of the reasons that we press for access for the ICRC and for the UN. Ambassador Blake has been anominated nominated by President Obama to be the State Department Assistant Secretary for South Asia. On his last official day as U.S. ambassador, Blake was responded to reporters who question whether Washington had spoke out forcefully enough during the past few weeks when both the Sri Lankan government and rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, claimed the other was deliberately killing the civilians. The Secretary General on a tour visit said it was clear Sri Lanka does not have adequate resources to handle the situation alone. He said such a huge challenge could only be adequately confronted with help from international community. Later in the day, here in Kandy, the top UN official met President Mahinda Rajapaksa, welcoming the President's promise to resettle most of the displaced Tamils by the end of the year. Austrian police say armed man attacked worshiper today inside the a sick Sikh temple in Vienna. At least 11 people were wounded in the attack. The top U.S. military official, Arrow Admiral Mike Mullen said it could take a couple of days to verify the test, but he had no reason to doubt North Korea's claim. In Washington, President Barack Obama condemned the test. United States and international community must take action in response. South Korea says it will join regional partners in sticking a strong response as we hear from Kurt Achin in Seoul. Six guards were killed in an the attack as well as at least one civilian. A leader of Al-Shabab militia * speaking to the news conference with via telephone says his groups organized the attack. The attack was a success, he says, and more attacks will follow in a coming days and weeks. He identified the attacker is a young Somali man. Earlier reports suggested that the attacker may be a foreigner. Mogadishu has experienced the its worst violence in a month since insurgents from Shabab and Hizbul Islamic militias launched a new offensive on May 8. The government says more than 200 people have been killed in the fighting, most civilians. And the United Nations says sum of 57,000 have been displaced from their homes. Insurgents are trying to topple the moderate Islamist government led by President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed. Military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas says at least 6 soldiers were killed and 11 wounded during the recent fighting. During a press conference today, he said Pakistani forces are now have in control of three villages near the Kabal area of Swat. The army launched the offensive earlier this month after the militants violated the a peace agreement and advanced within 100 kilometers of the capital, Islamabad.



Pakistan Supreme Court has lifted the ban on opposition leader Nawaz Sharif and his brother that prevented them from running for elected office.

Until now, South Korea has only taken part as an observer. North Korea warned last month that they would view South Korea for full participation as a declaration of the war. For weeks South Korea officials delayed the expected announcement they it would join, but the experts said they had no other choice after Monday's underground nuclear weapons test by the North. South Korea Foreign Minister Yu Myung Hwan told lawmakers Tuesday, joining PSI was the correct move for a mature nation. Yun said participating in PSI will help control North Koreas development of dangerous nuclear materials.

North Korea test-fired another short-range missile off its east coast today and threatened to take retaliatory action if the United Nations imposes sanctions because of its latest nuclear test. South Koreas Yonhap news agency quotes a South Korean official as saying the North launched a new type of land-to-air missile from its launch site. It was the sixth short-range missile North Korea has fired since its nuclear test on Monday. North Koreas state-run news agency warned today of what it called further self-defense measures if there is, in its words, further provocation by the U.N. Security Council.



The Sri Lankan military is denying a British newspaper report that says more than 20,000 civilians were killed in the final push against Tamil Tiger rebels. The Times said in its Friday edition an independent investigation found most of civilians were killed by government forces. The newspaper said says it writes arrived at the death toll after reviewing area aerial photographs, official documents, witness count accounts and expert testimony. Sri Lankan officials said the Times death toll is inaccurate. The government has blamed the rebels for the civilian deaths. UN official said have estimated at least 7,000 civilians were killed in soul the final assault that ended a 25-year civil war.
