Pakistan’s military says helicopters and fighter jets are pounding militants in the Northwest part of the country. The military is trying to expel Taliban extremists from Burner, a district that is only 100 kilometers from the capital. A Pakistani army spokesman said the military expanded its operation against Taliban today. He said officials have attained communications that showed the Taliban had no plans to leave Burner. He said the military estimates about 500 militants in that district.

The World Health Organization has raised its alert level for the swine flu virus to face phase four, to two steps below a full below pandemic. The deaths toll from the disease has increased in Mexico where outbreak originated. Mexican health officials announced late Monday 152 people were believed to have died from swine flu and 1600 have been sickened. A WHO official points out that this disappointed pandemic is not a certainty. The virus has been confirmed in Britain, Canada, New Zealand and Spain, while Australia, South Korea and France are investigating suspected cases.

Asia's traveling industry struggling with weak demand because of the weak global economy, is breathing bracing for the fallout from the flu. Ron Corben reports from the Bangkok.

Airline industry import and port authorities around Asia are monitoring arriving passengers, hoping to detect and isolate anyone infected with swine flu which broke out in Mexico in recent weeks. Governments around the world are urging its citizens to avoid traveling to areas infected with swine flu, to minimize its spread. John Koldowski, is a spokesman for the Pacific Asia traveler Association, says they there had been hoped that the region's traveling industry would begin to recovery from economic slump late this year. Now, says Koldowski, the outlook is uncertain.

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt says the Sri Lankan government has denied him entering entry into the country. He is a member of a European Delegation, pressing for a ceasefire between the Sri Lankan government and Tamil Tiger Rebels. Bildt was scheduled to visit the country this week with British Foreign Secretary David Miliband and his French counterpart Bernard Kouchner. European officials say only Miliband and Kouchner have been granted permission to enter Sri Lanka. Bildt said Tuesday that Stockholm is recalling its ambassador to Colombo in response.

Gunmen in Somalia have released two European aid workers, Derek Kilner has more from Nairobi. The two aid workers, one Belgian and one Dutch, have been working for Doctors Without Borders. They were adopted abducted by a group of gunmen on April 19 while traveling between towns of the Bakool region of southern Somalia, near the border with Ethiopia. A clan in Bakool. Ali Mumin confirmed their release. He said no ransom had been paid. The kidnappers are previously demanded 4,000,000 dollars ransom for the hostages. Abductions of aid workers are common in Somalia.
According to the United Nations, 16 aid workers are being held in Somalia, including
Four Europeans and two Kenyans. A total of 26 aid workers were abducted in 2008,
and 35 killed. Aid officials warn insecurity threaten humanitarian effort in

President Barack Obama says the government is doing all they it can to control the swine flu outbreak following the first reported of death in the United States. Mr.Obama said at the White House today the US is taking upmost atmost precautions to deal with the outbreak and is closely monitoring the situation. He urged health authorities to be juveniles vigilant about identifying suspected cases and said school with suspected cases should consider closing if the situation could becomes serious. That It is also recommendation of our public health officials that schools with confirmed or suspected cases of H1N1, should strongly consider temporarily closing so that we can be as safe as possible. The World Health Organization is planning to hold a scientific review today to discuss the latest developments in findings about swine flu virus. Europe meanwhile is gearing up for an anticipated increase in cases that we hear from Tom River in London.

A handful of additional confirmed cases have been reported in Europe, three cases in Germany, one in Austria means swine flu has spread to full European countries, and the number in Spain is has doubled to four, while three more people in Britain have contracted the disease bringing the toll up to five. Of the three new cases in Britain, Prime Minister Gordon Brown told colleagues in Parliament that all are doing well.

All of them have traveled recently from Mexico, all of them have mild symptoms, and all of them are receiving and responding well to the treatment that is has to been effective so far to used at Tami flu.

General Abbus said 70 police and paramilitary troops were kidnapped from police stations Tuesday by Taliban fighters in Buner, but 18 of them have been recovered. A top Taliban commander warned today that the militants will carry out a wave of ambushes, suicide attacks and bombings in a new affensive offensive against international troops. Mullah Berader, said to be the top deputy to Taliban leader Mullah Omar, issued a statement saying the violent campaign will be launched tomorrow against what he called invading forces and Afghan officials supporting them.

The visiting Foreign Ministers of Britain and France say they have failed to persuade Sri Lanka to end its assault Tamil Tiger rebels in order to protect civilians trapped in the northern war zone. Britain David Miliband and France Bernare Cushnare today urged the Sri Lankan counterpart to implement and an immediate choose truce during talks.

Hong Kong, the Philippines and Australia activated swine flu hotlines Thursday as a part of step for us to prevent the an outbreak. Authorities have also urged public to maintain good hygiene to prevent the spread of the virus. In the Asia-Pacific, only New Zealand has confirmed cases of swine flu. Philippine health officials went on television Thursday to alert the public of a threat of pandemic as described by the World Health Organization. Health Secretary Francisco Duque said personal hygiene is first line of defense against swine flu.

Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze, Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective. Please avoid close contact with sick people.

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili said a mutiny and army battalion base near to Tbilisi is an isolated incident and has been brought under control. Residents are fleeing a town in northwest Pakistan after the military there were warned fighting with Taliban militants could escalate in the region. Hundreds of residents were seeing leaving the Swat Valley’s main town today after military said militants were patrolling parts of town and had fired on security forces.

A provincial governor in western Afghanistan says security forces backed by Western warplanes battled insurgents today after Taliban fighters publicly executed three civilians. Farah provincial governor Rohullah Amin said the fighting has killed at least 25 insurgents. The growing instability   involves Pakistan and Afghanistan will top in the agenda when US President Barack Obama meets with Afghan's President Hamid Karzai and Pakistan's president Asif Zardari this week in Washington. US Defense Secretary Robert Gates says in Saudi Arabia on a tour aimed at reassuring allies that any overtures to Iran will not hurt ties with Arab States. Gates arrive today from Cairo where earlier in the day. US Defense Secretary Robert Gates is in Afghanistan to speak with American troops. Officials say Gates who has been on the Middle East tour landed today in the Afghan capital Cabul Kabul. President Barack Obama has ordered 21,000 additional forces to reinforce 38,000 already in Afghanistan.

Red Cross officials are confirming local reports that US-led air strikes in western Afghanistan earlier this week killed dozens of civilians. VOA's Barry Newhouse reports from Islamabad. Local Afghan officials said the incident accured occurred during in a battle Monday and Tuesday in Farah Province when Afghan troops aided by US soldiers were battling Taliban insurgents. Local officials said bombing raids on suspected Taliban positions killed as many as 100 civilians, and residents are still taking digging through rubble looking for more bodies. The Pakistani Military says it has killed more than 60 Taliban militants during an upsurge fighting in the country northwest. The army says about 35 of the militants were killed in the Swat Valley today when Pakistani forces carried out air and ground attacks near the region's main town of Mingora. It says the rest were killed in Buner. The military says two soldiers were killed in a bomb blast. There were also reports of civilian casualties in the fighting.

NATO has begun month-long military maneuvers in Georgia despite vocal protests among and mounting diplomatic pressure from neighboring Russia. Some 1,300 troops from more than a dozen nations are participating in exercises. As military drills began today, Russia moved to expel two Canadian diplomats working as NATO envoys. Civilians are trying to escape fighting in Pakistan's Swat Valley as government troops stepped up their offensive against Taliban Militants after the calpse collapse of a peace agreement in the region. Military helicopters and warplanes were pounding suspected Taliban position today. Authorities temporarily relax their curfew in the region and provincial officials were pressing for a flood of tens of thousands of displaced civilians.

A crowd of demonstrators threw rocks on at government buildings in western Afghanistan today to protest recent civilian deaths the day that they blamed on U.S. air strikes. Residents of town of Farah said there was some gunfire as police faced off against the protesters. Health officials said at least four people were wounded. The crowd was protesting an incident earlier this week which local Afghan officials say U.S. airstrikes and related fighting killed more than 100 people mainly civilians. The top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan, General David Mckiernan said Wednesday preliminary evidence indicates U.S. forces may not have been responsible for the deaths. A team of foreign troops and Afghan officials headed to the site to investigate.

Obama administration is unveiling a new set of proposed budget cuts totally totaling about 17 billion dollars. Official said earlier the President would release at least a list of 121 federal programs to be cut or reduced in his line by line effort to tram the budget for next year. Barack Obama made the announcement today at the White House.
"Some of cuts are we putting for forward today are more painful for others, some are larger than others, in fact, a few of programs we reminate eliminate will produce less than one million dollars in savings. And in Washington I guess that’s consider a tribute, outside of Washington, I still consider a lot of money." Expected cuts added up to only a tiny percentage of the 3.5 trillion dollars budget approved by Congress last month.

Sri Lanka's military says troops have pushed into one of few remaining rebel held villages. VOA correspondent Steve Herman reports form Colombo. Having come back Heavy combat is reported in the last strip of land controlled by the rebels on the country's northeast coast. Defense officials say soldiers overran an earthen fortification of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam.

Therefore we could minimize our damage and they lost eight suicide cadres.” The military is not releasing casualty figures for its troops. But authority say many Tamils are estimated between 50,000 and 100,000 by United Nations are being held as human shields by the rebels.

Today's fourth round of India's general elections on saw millions of people cast votes in 7 states and federal administered capital, New Delhi. Anjana Pasricha reports. In this suburb of Gurgaon, on the outskirts of New Delhi, votes  early to cast votes before the scorching midday heat set in. In this booming business hop hub, many people are voting on bread and butter issues like the economy and jobs. Suchorit Bhattacharya says they want new government to focus on issues such as poor in structure. ”The roads are bad and communities are bad. We lives in deep water.” But the in adjoining village, the picture is different. Here many voters are choosing to support candidates or parties which represent their cast.       This voter very much from boring polling booth saying his vote went to the candidate to belong to his community. In addition to the two main political parties, the ruling Congress Party and the opposition Politic Bharatiya Janata Party, many cast based  and regional parties have emerged in India in the last two decades.
