Authorities in the northeastern US State of New York say 50 people are dead after a commuter plane crashed into a house near the city of Buffalo late Thursday night. Chris Collins is county executive where the crash occurred.

Following the lead of the House of Representatives, the US Senate voted late Friday to approve a 787-billion-dollar economic recovery plan. The measure which passed on a 60-38 vote in the Senate now goes to the president for his signature next week. More on the vote from VOA's Deborah Tate.

President Barack Obama had called on Congress to approve an economic recovery plan before February 16th, the President's Day, federal holiday and lawmakers delivered. The measure, more than 1, 000 pages long is a package of spending and tax cuts aimed at creating jobs and growing the economy. It is a compromise between House and Senate versions of the legislation. Spending in the final bill was cut back from the earlier versions to win the support of three Republicans in the Senate. Their support was crucial to get a 60 vote minimum in the 100-seat chamber to overcome efforts by other Republicans to stall the bill.

The Taliban in Pakistan has declared a ten-day ceasefire in the northwestern Swat valley out of respect for government talks. Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan announced the truce today shortly after his group freed a Chinese engineer held captive for six months in Swat. Chinese state media Xinhua says the engineer arrived safely at the Chinese Embassy in Islamabad early Sunday. Khan said the engineer was released as a goodwill gesture for those government talks.

Mr. Hu was welcomed by trumpets, dancers and a 21-gun salute upon his arrival. He later met with Tanzania's president and says the two nations enjoy a relationship of solidarity and cooperation. Mr. Hu previously stopped in Senegal, where he signed aid and loan deals worth 90 million dollars, and Mali where he laid the first stone for a bridge in the capital. China has dramatically increased aid, trade and investment across the Africa in recent years. Critics say Beijing is exploiting the continent. China says its deals are mutually beneficial.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the United States is committed to forming a new partnership with Indonesia, emphasizing the growing importance to that country in the region. Clinton praised the relationship today, after talks in Jakarta with her Indonesian counterpart. The top US diplomat said she and President Barack Obama want to work with Indonesia on such pressing issues as the global economy and climate change. Government officials in Pakistan say they have reached a permanent cease-fire agreement with Taliban militants in the northwestern valley of Swat. Militants from various factions operate in northwestern Pakistan. Some use the territory to launch attacks in neighboring Afghanistan, targeting local and international forces.

There was no claim of responsibility, but Israeli officials said such attacks could not take place without the knowledge of the Islamic guerrilla group Hezbollah, which controls South Lebanon. Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran and Syria, said it was not involved. Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora issued a statement condemning the rocket attack, saying it threatened security and stability. Rocket fire has been rare since the Lebanon War in 2006. China has confirmed that 73 miners are dead, dozens are trapped because of a gas explosion in a coalmine. China's official Xinhua News Agency says the accident happened early Sunday at a mine in northern Shanxi province. The agency said there were 436 miners underground at the time of the explosion, but the most managed to escape.
