From the VOA news center in Washington, I'm Robert Burns.
The alleged mastermind of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks Khalid Sheikh Mohammed has told a military judge at the US Naval Base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, he wants the death penalty so he can become a Martyr. During a hearing Thursday, he chanted from the Koran, called the process an "inquisition, " and rejected his legal team saying he would defend himself. He was being arraigned with four alleged coconspirators. The hear charges against them for the attacks that killed nearly 3, 000 people. They'll face execution if convicted.
Zimbabwe's government has indefinitely suspended the work of all aid groups in the country, accusing them of violating the terms of their registration. Zimbabwe's social welfare minister said he has learned that / aid and development groups are breaching the terms of their agreement with the government. He did not elaborate.
On Thursday, the United States has expressed outrage after Zimbabwean security forces detained US and British diplomats trying to visit victims of the political violence. VOA's David Gallus reports from the State Departments.
"US officials are calling the latest incident "outrageous and unacceptable", but they say American diplomats intend to remain in Zimbabwe despite the harassment to support citizens of that country struggling for democracy. In what was described here as "clearly premeditated act ", a band of about 40 Zimbabwean police, intelligence agents and others stopped the convoy of US and British diplomats north of the capital, threatening the officials, beating one of their local drivers and slashing the vehicle tyres. Five American diplomats and two local staff members were detained. And though they were later released, State Departments spokesman Sean McCormack said the incident-the second of its kind in as many months-will not be forgotten. He said the United States protested vigorously to officials in Harare, will seek out and raise the issue with Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's delegation at the world food conference in Rome. David Gallus, VOA news, the State Department. "
Meanwhile delegates at the Food Summit in Rome have approved the declaration trying to work together to ease the suffering caused by the global rise in food prices. The United Nations says it will take 15 billion to 20 billion dollars each year to stand the tide of soaring food crisis that increase global hunger and poverty and spark rioting in some countries.
/ special UN and African envoys on Darfur say prospects for peace talks aimed at ending the crisis in Sudan's conflict-ridden province of Darfur are slim. The diplomats failed to get peace negotiations restarted during a two-day meeting in Geneva. Lisa Schlein has details.
"The special envoys call the meeting "constructive", but they admit the diplomatic process is at an impasse. The five-year war in Darfur between the Sudanese-backed Janjaweed Arab militia and African rebel groups has claimed more than 200, 000 lives and displaced over 2 million people. UN special envoy for Darfur Jan Eliasson, says it is unrealistic to expect substantive negotiations any time soon. So he says it is crucial that the conflict does not escalate. Participants at the meeting agree recent fighting between Sudan's army and former southern rebels in and around the oil-rich town of Abyei could be the flashpoint to re-ignite a war between the Muslim north and southern Christian and animists south. Lisa Schlein for VOA news, Geneva. "
US officials say they are concerned about reports of Burma's military government has been evicting some cyclone survivors from their temporary shelters. And an official with the US Agency for International Development says if evictions are taking place, people may be forced back into areas where disaster experts may not be able to work. Analysts reported this week that Burma's military government was forcing some survivors back to their homes even if their homes were destroyed.
And the US Democratic Party's presumed presidential nominee Barack Obama says Hillary Clinton was a tough and outstanding rival candidate for the party nomination. He made the comment during a town hall meeting in southeastern Virginia. Senator Clinton has promised to wind (up) her bid for the White House and rally her supporters behind Obama. In the statement Clinton said her differences with the Illinois senators were small compared to those for senator John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee.
And that's the latest. I'm Robert Burns, VOA news.
